Though I am suffering for it today, I wanted to share how much I thoroughly enjoyed the Bluff 50k yesterday. The event was far more challenging than this newbie would have guessed, but the encouraging volunteers, friendly competitors and well-stocked aid stations made the entire experience very positive. When I was able to look up, the views were beautiful as well. A perfect way to spend an October morning in Connecticut. Thank you to all involved in planning and executing this fine event!

I had an awesome time at the 50k yesterday. It was my first ultra 2 weeks after my first marathon. I have very little experience running on trails so this course was pretty rough for me. But I knew I’d be able to finish in the cut off so I took my time and enjoyed the scenery. I was able to go fast on some good stretches to make up for cutting down to a fast hike on others. I was happy with my experience. The markings were great, I thought I would get lost for sure, but I had little to no trouble finding my way and the aid stations and volunteers were great. Every one was there to have a good time and I’m sure for the most part everyone did. I hope I have the guts to try it again next year, as I said I’m a beginner at best when it comes to trails but it’s definitely manageable to find a pace you feel safe at so you can A. Not get hurt. B. Have some fun. and C. finish. Thanks for a great experience. Now I can say I completed my first marathon and my first ultra marathon all in the same month. Thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors.

Bimblers Bluff 50K – I’ve made my decision. The Bimblers Bluff 50K is an awesome trail race – well organized, lots of enthusiastic/supportive volunteers, and well stocked aid stations. The course is very well marked (still need to pay attention) and very runnable. Don’t be fooled by very runnable as the track is loaded with steep hills (up & down), rocks and roots making for a very technical trail race experience. Anyone looking for a Fall ultra trail race should consider the Bluff.

I was one of the very few who did not finish the Bimbler’s Bluff 50K, but this was certainly not due to the enthusiasm and encouragement received from all the race volunteers, especially those at Aid Station 4. Before arriving at that aid station, I had decided to call it quits. But, as I crawled into the station, I got a big round of cheering and applause that started me thinking otherwise. I mentioned to one of the volunteers that I had thought I would pull out of the race; she understood, but also told me to think about how far I had gone so far, and how good it would feel to cross the finish line. After resting and eating a bit, I decided to go on. However, my wife was delayed in coming to see me, and in the end, I did not go on. Since I’m just now (five day later) able to go down stairs without turning sideways and bringing both feet to the same landing, I think it was a wise decision! Thanks for a great race.

Course seemed a bit long for a 5k but other than that it was great. I can think of a couple of improvements for next year but none of them involve you. Altogether a great race, well planned, nice course and super volunteers. Thanks
